Not every "surf camp" is built the same. Some are glorified babysitting with boards nearby. Here's what actually matters when you're choosing one for your kid.
Questions to Ask Before You Book
- Coach-to-camper ratio: anything looser than 1-to-6 in the water is too loose for beginners.
- Progression, not just fun: is there an actual paddling and pop-up curriculum, or is it free surf every day?
- Gear included: boards, wetsuits, and leashes should be provided, not an extra cost.
What a Week Looks Like at Sea League
Our Summer Camp starts every session on the sand with paddle and pop-up drills before kids ever paddle out, then builds toward independent wave-catching by the end of the week. Coaches are UCSB students, certified in ocean rescue, who spend their whole summer on this stretch of coast.
A good surf camp should leave a kid more confident in the water than when they started — not just tired and sunburned. For beginner surf fundamentals, the International Surfing Association is a useful reference.
