Kayaking and paddleboarding are both great entry points to being on the water — lower stakes than surfing, and a good way to build comfort before moving toward waves.

Which One First?

  • Kayaking: more stable, seated, easier for younger or more cautious kids.
  • Paddleboarding: builds balance and core strength, better for kids already comfortable standing on a board.

Where to Go

Kids kayaking near the Santa Barbara harbor

The harbor and East Beach offer protected, low-current water that's ideal for a first outing. Save the open coastline for once a kid is a confident paddler.

Paddling shows up throughout our own Summer Camp curriculum as a stepping stone toward surfing — the balance and water comfort transfer directly. For paddling safety basics, see the American Canoe Association.
