First-lesson nerves are normal — for kids and parents both. Knowing what to expect helps everyone relax into it.

Before the Water

Every lesson starts on the sand with a gear check, a safety briefing, and dry-land pop-up practice. Kids don't touch the water until they've practiced the motion enough times to do it without thinking.

In the Water

  • Whitewater first: catching broken waves close to shore before anything further out.
  • Coach alongside, not just watching: a coach in the water pushing kids into their first waves.
  • Short sets: frequent breaks keep kids from tiring out before the fun part.

Most kids catch their first whitewater wave within the first lesson. Standing up consistently usually comes over the following few sessions — patience here pays off fast. Ready to book a first lesson? See our Summer Camp and registration page.

For a broader intro to the sport, the International Surfing Association has good beginner resources.
